Student Mentorship Program

The Mentor Program is a great opportunity for area GIS professionals to work with HISD instructors and students. The program has successfully introduced students to GIS tools, area professionals that use GIS in our community and a chance to visit the University of Houston-Downtown campus.

Students from Michael E. DeBakey High School Barbra Jordan High School and Bellaire High School have all received recognition for their 2005 Mentor Program projects.

In 2005, one DeBakey High School group entered and won first place in the 2005 GIS Day Map Gallery. Professional organizations and individuals from the 13-county Gulf Coast Planning region submit GIS related maps and exhibits for peer competition. In this competition DeBakey Mentor Students won first place.

The students from Jordan High School won second place at the national level for their entry in the 2005 Diamler Chrysler Design Institute school competition. In this competition students develop a complete product design project with responsibility for evaluating consumer requirements, preparing the technical design and preparing a market analysis for the new product.

Mentor Students from Bellaire High School won first place in the 2005 Mentorship Program Competition for their project which analyzed the trend of rebuilding houses within the City of Bellaire. Two of the students from this group have gone on to work as summer interns using GIS at a local oil and gas company.
